BOTOX® is based on the botulinum toxin and in cosmetic dermatology treatments it is injected directly into overactive muscles. It has been safely and effectively used for the treatment of eye squints (strabismus) and eyelid spasms (blepharospasm) since the early eighties.

Botulinum toxin has been approved by the Medicines Control Agency in the UK for the treatment of the two conditions mentioned above and for muscle spasm (focal spasticity) and sweaty armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis).

Vistabel is a different brand of botulinum toxin produced by Allergan, the manufacturers of BOTOX. It is identical to BOTOX. The new name is used for the smaller package approved in January 2006 in the UK for the cosmetic treatment of glabellar frown lines.

BOTOX® is the formulation of botulinum toxin used at the Shropshire Skin Clinic (SSC) for cosmetic purposes. In many countries this has received approval for cosmetic injection of frown lines, but not in the UK as yet. Injection of Botox® in this way is legal in the UK, but it is termed as unlicensed use.

Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow's feet. These are the areas most commonly treated with botulinum toxin. Some lines around the nose, mouth and chin as well as muscle bands on the neck can also be treated. Injecting botulinum toxin into the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.

Botulinum toxin therapy cannot replace wrinkle correction methods such as filler injections or laser peeling when these are necessary. The initial effects of treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours and the maximum effect is reached in about one to two weeks. Facial expression will become more relaxed, but by no means mask like. Our aim at the SSC is that the overall result is very natural.

The effect of treatment generally lasts for three to six months. Re treatment is then required.
